Course Module Expectations
Completing the ETH 101 course modules will present learners with the opportunity to participate in webinars, project postings entries and essays. Each module begins with an explanation of content and learning objectives.
- Complete all modules
- Complete module Learning Checks
- Participate in two on-line group discussions
- Craft two postings in response to the Research Questions
- Craft two reactions and post responses to Group Discussions
- Participate in one webinar
- Complete the Final Project
Module 1: History and Overview of Ethics and Integrity
For Superior Achievement
- Learners will engage in two project postings per module and participate in one asynchronous webinar per course. Learners must examine the Research Questions and after reflection, post a 300 to 400 word response to the Essay Board.
- Learner must research 100% of the Learning Objectives outlined at the beginning of each module.
- During the first Group Discussion project posting, learners will consider their experiences with ethics and integrity and post a case study to exemply your knowledge and understanding of ethics and integrity. This could include, for example: providing definitions of ethics, morals, values, deontological and teleological ethical systems and frameworks; creating a rationale that places various ethical frameworks on a continuum between deontological and teleological and relate this in two ways: the means justifying the ends and the means toward the end matters; or defining the deontological and teleological ethical systems as they relate to the legal aspects of the criminal justice system.
- During the First Research Questions select two of the questions posed for consideration. This could include, for example: defining the frameworks; why the study of ethics and integrity is important; or, differentiate between values and beliefs.
- During the second Group Discussion project posting select two of the questions posed. For example:, can moral behaviors be viewed; does our value system effect the discretion police officers have when enforcing the law; or, do residents of the community agree with the trade-off between freedom and public safety.
- During the Second Research Questions select two of the questions posed for consideration. Such as: the justification for crime prevention; explanation of the paradigms. Exemplify with a scenario.
- During the Third Group Discussion create a scenario that includes the definition of a ethical framework as applied within the law enforcement environment.
- Attains 100% on the Learning Check.
For Proficient Achievement
- Learners will engage in one project posting per module and participate in one asynchronous webinar per course. Learners must examine the Research Questions and after reflection, post a 300 to 400 word response to the Essay Board.
- Learner must research 80% of the Learning Objectives outlined at the beginning of each module.
- During the first Group Discussion project posting learners will consider their experiences with ethics and integrity by discussing with the group one of the questions posed in the group discussion.
- During the First Research Questions select one of the questions posed for consideration.
- During the second Group Discussion project posting select one of the questions posed.
- During the Second Research Questions select one of the questions posed for consideration.
- During the Third Group Discussion create a scenario that includes the definition of a ethical framework as applied within the law enforcement environment.
For Not Achieved
- Limited review of modules.
- Does not participates in Group Discussion.
- Does not craft or post Research Questions.
- Lacks evidence of the application of course material at or above the proficient achievement level.
- Does not attain 100% on the Learning Check.
Module 2: Ethical Frameworks, Moral Development and Moral Reasoning in Decision Making
For Superior Achievement
- Learners will engage in two blog postings per module and participate in one asynchronous webinar per course. Learners must examine the Research Questions and after reflection, post a 300 to 400 word response to the Essay Board.
- Learner must research 100% of the Learning Objectives outlined at the beginning of each module.
- During the first Group Discussion learners will consider their experiences with ethics and integrity training during their basic training at the academy and blog their thoughts. Also, learners will discuss two of the questions posed in the First Group Discussion. This could include, for example: whether grounded in ‘means’ or ‘ends' is better or does it matter to the community which approach is taken as long as crime is down.
- During the First Research Questions select two of the questions posed for consideration. This could include, for example: a discussion of the frameworks within the ethical system and how they align; the relationship between moral reasoning and the frameworks. Exemplify with a case study.
- During the second Group Discussion select two of the questions posed and blog your response. For example: How do philosophies effect community policing as an enforcement strategy?
- During the Second Research Questions select two of the questions posed for consideration. Such as: where is the learner in their moral development? Is the learner a ‘crime fighter’ or a ‘public servant’ or both? This can be presented in an imaginary manner.
- During the Third Group Discussion create a scenario that includes the definition of a ethical framework as applied within the law enforcement environment.
- Attains 100% on the Learning Check.
For Proficient Achievement
- Learner must research 80% of the Learning Objectives outlined at the beginning of each module.
- During the First Research Questions select one of the questions posed for consideration.
- During the second Group Discussion select one of the questions posed and blog your response.
- During the Second Research Questions select one of the questions posed for consideration.
- During the Third Group Discussion create a scenario that includes two officers engaged in the same enforcement action but from differing ethical systems.
- Attains 100% on the Learning Check.
For Not Achieved
- Limited review of modules.
- Does not participate in one Group Discussion.
- Does not craft or post Research Questions.
- Does not attain 100% on the Learning Check.
Module 3: The Flourishing Environment: The Application of Ethics and Integrity in Law Enforcement
For Superior Achievement
- Learners will engage in two blog postings per module and participate in one asynchronous webinar per course. Learners must examine the Research Questions and after reflection, post a 300 to 400 word response to the Essay Board.
- Learner must research 100% of the Learning Objectives outlined at the beginning of each module.
- The First Group Discussion should focus on your personal values (if recognized) providing examples of two. Also, learners will explore two additional questions posed in the Group Discussion.
- The First Research Questions should include two examples of how your ethics and values effect community policing. Also, include two of the questions posed.
- The Second Group Discussion should focus on the techniques the Master Trainer would use to teach ethics and integrity using Problem Based Learning.
- In the Second Research Questions learners should post their own personal approach to integrity and values. Explain the outcome that exists when personal integrity and values conflict with organizational integrity and values. Also, include two of the questions posed.
- In the Third Group Discussion create a case study wherein PBL is used to teach ethics and integrity.
- Attains 100% on the Learning Check.
