Module 3: The Flourishing Environment: The Application of Ethics and Integrity in Law Enforcement

As a participant in an on-line problem based learning course, you are required to effectively facilitate the learning process for students in a course titled Ethics and Integrity. To this end, it is imperative you demonstrate your ability to apply the ethical frameworks, the elements that must be included in order for the behavior to be judged and how values affect the success of community policing. Using the content learned in Modules 1, 2 and 3, you will demonstrate your ability to engage your students in learning through the use of the PBL and adult learning strategies including, self-discovery. This module focuses on ethics as a learned or innate behavior, values as they relate to community policing, laws versus morals and the effect of ethical and unethical behavior demonstrated by police within the community.
You will work with your group to fulfill the objectives of the module. You will also work independently to research and prepare to respond to your discussion questions as well as participate in discussion board postings.
As you enrich your knowledge of ethics, it is now time to create strategies for implementation within the community. To engage in an in-depth discussion with learners, it is important that you discuss values and how they relate to discretionary judgments as applied within the community. To demonstrate the attainment of knowledge relative to values and their effect on police enforcement strategies, as well as the decision making process, it is important to recognize that not all values are equal, some are more important than others. Organizational values, and those exemplified by police officers, are judged by members of the community.
